Plate IV, Fig. 1.—Recently planted dry-land olive orchards about twenty milesfrom Sfax. The view shows the careful alignment and wide spacing of thetrees, which are 80 feet apart each way and number only 7 to the acre.Most of the trees shown are from ten to twelve years old. The hillsidein the immediate foreground and that in the left background are unfit forplanting to olives because of the absence of soil, a calcareous rock comingto the surface at these points.
