English: Leveraged Freedom Chair (LFC) designed at MIT Mobility Lab. In many places in the world, people who need wheelchairs have a very difficult time getting around. Roads are often rough and rarely paved. Potholes, exposed rocks and gullies eroded through dirt or gravel tracks are the norm, and sidewalks are few and far between. Using a standard wheelchair under these conditions can be impossible. The LFC uses levers to create a mechanical advantage for the wheelchair user. This gives the chair the extra power it needs to navigate obstacles that hand-wheeled chairs cannot handle.
