These workers came from India to work in the post-Katrina reconstruction effort in New Orleans. They paid thousands of dollars to an unscrupulous labor recruiter for visas they were told would allow them to live and work permanently in the US. The visas turned out to be temporary, they were held against their will and forced to work in deplorable conditions for a shipping company called Signal International. They escaped from the labor camp earlier this year and began to get media attention to their cause. They march from New Orleans all the way to DC and have been on a hunger strike for the past 28 days. They are requesting a special visa under the Trafficking Victims Protection Act of 2000 so that they can remain in the country while the Department of Justice investigates their employer.
