Dans ce tableau de propagande exposé au Salon de 1787 au Louvre, Vigée-Lebrun prend comme modèle la Madonna della Gatta de Giulio Romano et commence la toile le 9 juillet 1786. La peintre se garde bien de représenter un collier sur la reine qui porte une robe de velours rouge bordé de marte, au drapé savant, et un béret de velours écarlate empanaché. Elle tient sur ses genoux son avant-dernier né, Louis-Charles habillé en fille, la tête coiffée d'un bonnet et les bras gesticulant, son attitude générale donnant l'impression d'une solide vitalité, ce que confirment les témoignages contemporains. La petite Marie-Thérèse pose affectueusement sa tête sur son épaule droite, tandis que le dauphin entoure d’un bras protecteur le berceau vide couvert d'un crêpe noir, afin de rappeler au public la mort récente de Marie-Sophie-Béatrice. L'armoire servant de serre-bijoux et ornée de fleurs de lys, luit dans la pénombre.
